Do Bullet Antennas Work for FM Radio? An Honest Answer
A bullet antenna is built mainly for looks, so expect weaker AM/FM reception than with your factory antenna, especially away from town. Our bullet antennas don't affect XM, Bluetooth or satellite radio. If AM/FM matters, we say our 12-inch flexible antenna gives the most reception of the sizes it sells.

Quick answer
A bullet antenna will still pick up AM/FM stations, but it is the most looks-focused option you can put on your truck, and you should expect weaker radio reception than the factory whip, especially away from town. We don't claim its bullet is a strong FM performer. What it does say is that its bullets "will not affect XM, Bluetooth or Satellite Radio."
So the honest answer depends on how you listen. If your truck lives on Bluetooth, phone streaming or SiriusXM, a bullet gives you the look you want without costing you anything you use. If you rely on local FM, or AM, the 12-inch flexible antenna is the better buy.
Who a bullet antenna is perfect for
- Streamers and SiriusXM subscribers. If the AM/FM tuner rarely gets used, a bullet's length doesn't matter.
- Owners who want the boldest look. our bullet has the "same dimensions as a real 50 Cal bullet," machined from "6061 Solid Billet Aluminum." It's black only.
- City and suburban drivers. Close to the transmitters, strong local stations are more forgiving of a short antenna.
- Anyone tired of the whip slapping in car washes or catching on the garage door. our bullets are listed as "Carwash safe."
Who should choose a flexible antenna instead
- Daily FM listeners, especially outside town or on long highway drives.
- AM listeners. AM depends even more on antenna length than FM does.
- HD Radio fans. HD channels ride on the regular FM/AM signal, so a weaker antenna can make them drop out.
- Rural owners and anyone in hilly country, where stations are far away.
For these drivers, our guidance is clear: "The longer the antenna, the better strength," and our 12-inch flexible antenna "will provide the most reception out of the sizes we sell." Even then, we note "it may not be as good of reception as the 36" long OEM antenna that comes on your truck." The 8-inch flex is the middle ground, with what Ronin Factory calls "medium strength AM/FM radio reception." More detail is in short antenna reception by length.

our bullet: real-50-cal dimensions, 6061 billet, SmartLock
Our bullet antenna isn't a real bullet. It's machined from 6061 solid billet aluminum to the "same dimensions as a real 50 Cal bullet," and it comes in black only. It's sold in two lines:
- SmartLock bullet for Ford, Chevy & GMC, RAM and Jeep. It's "Protected by US Patent 12237563." An adapter threads onto your truck, the bullet slides over it, and a set screw installed with the included Allen key holds it on, so it can't be removed by hand without the key. Install the set screw by threading it in until it lightly touches the adapter without any force, then backing it off just a little; we recommend not tightening it. You can set the logo in any direction before you install the set screw. SmartLock bullets also get Ronin Factory's "Proprietary Black finish that will not fade in UV light."
- TuffLock bullet for Ford, Chevy & GMC, RAM, Jeep, Toyota. Toyota TuffLock antennas use a male threaded end (M5x0.8). This is our original design. Our TuffLock antennas now use our Proprietary Black finish that will not fade in UV light. We started switching our TuffLock antennas from anodized finishes to this UV fade-proof black finish in August 2025. We're phasing thread-lock out of TuffLock between 2025 and 2026 and recommends SmartLock "if you are worried about theft." See Loctite vs a locking antenna.
Installation "only takes a minute or two," and it isn't permanent, so you can go back to your factory antenna or switch to a flex later. Ronin Factory's install videos are on its Ford & RAM, Chevy & GMC and Jeep SmartLock instruction pages.
